Virtual Book Tour wrap up/Blood Pudding Press update

The final review of Read Write Poem's Virtual Book Tour (of Lisa Ciccarello's poetry chapbook 'At night, the dead:' published by Blood Pudding Press) was contributed by Ren Powell, editor of Babel Fruit magazine.

Some excerpts from this review:

“Lisa Ciccarello’s chapbook is an example of why poetry books are important as works of art. That is, 'poetry book' distinct from 'book of poems'.

...as with any charm, the context of the repetitive whole is mesmerising.

The vague references to superstitious practices are never fully fleshed within a cultural context…

This vagueness allows for the ambivalence that characterizes the collection. The charm to ward off the dead becomes seductive, just as children are seduced by the fear of the Ouija board, just as pleasurable touching becomes painful within the context of insistent repetition, just as pain can become almost pleasurable. The dead are feared and longed for: ‘The dead put their fingers in your mouth’.

The sestina-like repetition in the collection creates a pleasing tension with this reader, as I want to speed through the increasingly familiar phrases, but am stopped short for close reading by the poet’s attention to detail and abbreviated metaphors…

Clearly Ciccarrello’s poems grow from their communion with the dead – the kind of growth that needs the space of chapbook.”

IS THERE PIG IN FROSTING?

I was having one of those slow, achey, icky days in terms of personal physicality and productivity (um, maybe that is pretty much just an overly wordy way to say I have one of my headaches), BUT I must make mention of some extra-special excitingly delightful news I have received. Er, actually, you can read the news for yourself on the Slash Pine Press blog:

http://www.slashpinepress.blogspot.com/

Just in case you don't feel like leaving my blog until after you've read this whole entry: the gist is that my chapbook manuscript FONDANT PIG ANGST is going to be published by Slash Pine Press, a new independent press that not only has a great name, but also a highly appealing mission statement, which includes the resonant phrase, "a process of risk and otherness".

And I am going to be the press's very first author!

I'm super-duper excited about this and will have more to say on this matter soon.

Not right now, because despite this superb news, I am pretty off-kilter today.

This news is almost unbelievably exciting though, right? I can hardly believe I've won a book contest type thingee! Pinch me! Woohoo!

P.S. Also, Dana Guthrie Martin's ROBOT has agreed to write a book blurb for me. Pinch me again! Woohoo!

CutThroat Entertainment

I've been doing some promotional writing for the fun new Columbus, Ohio based independent film & media company CutThroat Entertainment. Their latest film, a horror movie called BREAK, recently wrapped filming and final preparations are now in the works for a special premiere party, circa Halloween!

Since Halloween is not so very far away, I thought I'd share my promo piece about BREAK for those who might be interested--and in case you're an interested party near the Columbus, Ohio area, I'll share more specifics soon, including exactly when, where, and how to buy your tickets.

My BREAK article appears below. If it piques your interest, please feel free to also check out my other new CTE articles via my Associated Content page here:

Let me know what you think, ask me me your questions, & stay tuned for more CTE details!

P.S. I will also be adding ongoing CutThroat Entertainment linkage to my little Local Articles & Involvements sidebar to the right.

You might think you know what to expect when a mix of irreverent young adults find their way into a dark forest and start tossing around scary campfire tales and blood-drenched rumors about an unstable axe murderer who terrorized the area in the past, but was never captured.

As the past starts to horrifically intersect with the present, you might think your suspicions were correct. You might be terribly wrong. If some of your gruesome predictions prove true, know that this is only the beginning. The scene will change and your comfort levels will be tested in some terrifying ways.

Stay close to the one you love and pay attention to detail, lest you become another careless victim in a terrible and increasingly unpredictable series of gory mishaps. Don’t dare to be careless. Don’t dare to take your safety for granted. Carefully prepare yourself for BREAK from CutThroat Entertainment, coming at you Halloween 2009. It will challenge your assumptions and then threaten all you hold dear!

BREAK. You’ll never see it coming (but if you’re in the mood for a creepy sneak peek, see the Break trailer, here:
http://cutthroat-entertainment.com/news-updates/news/break-trailer/).

update: The date for the BREAK Premiere event has now been set as December 3. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more Premiere Party details coming soon.

(B)URN

I feel more popular today than yesterday, although I still feel unattractive. Go figure.

Enough of that angst, though. I'm writing to announce that a very new sequence of six short poems called (B)URN has just been published as an e-chapbook by Gold Wake Press, here:

http://goldwakepress.org/2009/09/11/juliet-cook-burn/

This is free to read online and it will likely take you less than 10 minutes to do so, so please do feel free to partake and let me know what you think. Read some other Gold Wake Press e-chaps while you're there, too. Quite an assortment awaits you.

I feel like this sequence is a bit of a stylistic departure for me, or maybe not so much a stylistic departure as an imagistic departure. Strangely enough, the imagery was partially inspired by reading Patti Smith's latest poetry collection, which was not quite my style per se, yet after a while something about its tone or imagery began to seep into my subconscious. A photo of a black lamb was also a catalyst. So was my desire.

I'm in a little creative frenzy. I've been rather furiously writing and revising poetry these past few days, reading, thinking conceptually, and assembling a new chapbook manuscript that I'm quite excited about. It's called 'Soft Foam'. I can hardly wait to finish the assembly process so that I can submit it. I have my first submission source in mind and a good feeling about it. I submitted some individual poetry today, too--two Dear pieces and four designer vaginas.

Unfortunately, I soon need to temporarily break from these creative pursuits and apply for some jobs.

At least one office job and one organic pet store job.

self portraits

I'm pleased as spiked punch to report I have three new self-portrait poems online in the wonderful latest issue of Oranges & Sardines (Poets & Artists), hereabouts:

http://www.poetsandartists.com/

I must admit I never quite expected to see my name immediately following Billy Collins's name in the bios section of a literary magazine--and that's for more reasons than one. Ahem.

In any case, I can hardly wait to partake of the entire issue in all its poetic and visual art glory. Yum!

I think the issue went live this past weekend, but I'm playing catch-up after a beatiful Labor Day getaway that involved hiking, swimming, fishing, and more in the lovely Adirondacks region of upstate New York. Perhaps I'll post a few photos soon.

But for now if you'd like self-portrait photos, see my previous entry here (and if you'd like designer vaginas, see my entry before that) and if you'd like self-portrait poems and art galore, simply click the link above and look inside...

My poems therein play with stuffed peppers, queer cane toads, and sugary sponges, amongst other oddball entities.

More new poetry coming soon in Abjective, Action Yes, Bone Bouquet, Diagram, Melusine, Prayers for Children, Robot Melon, and more.

Now if only somebody would offer me an honorary professorship or some other paying gig, preferably creative.

Here's one each of me on the water (Great Sacandaga Lake) and me on a mountain (Hadley Mountain), from our Labor Day weekend getaway in the Adirondacks, upstate New York. I posted a few more on my Facebook.

little Friday update: I deleted that 'stick figure sexiness' entry that I'd posted last evening. It was a piece of older writing that I stumbled upon amongst my poetry whilst working on assembling a new chapbook manuscript last night and whereas it seemed quirkily appealing last night, it seemed oddly embarrassing this morning. That happens a lot.

Only six varietals of vintage lace remaining in the Blood Pudding Press etsy shop at http://www.bloodpuddingpress.etsy.com/.

The new chapbook manuscript in progress is tentatively titled 'Soft Foam'.

I finished partaking of the above-linked issue of Oranges & Sardines yesterday and thought it was a wonderful read as well as an extravaganza of provocative visual delights. Furthermore, it was excellently edited.

Wow, speaking of poetry chapbooks, a new sequence of six short poems called (B)URN has just been accepted for publication as a Gold Wake e-chap! Coming soon!

I am in a short manuscript assembling kind of mood...

I love autumn

It makes me feel like wearing lipstick--and reading--and writing poetry--and drinking Turkish coffee--and wine.
I'll add more text later, I hope, probably about the poetry.
We're visiting upstate New York this weekend, the Adirondacks. Pretty area; should be a good change of pace. I have to pack, as I am a very slow packer, but all I really want to do is work on poetry and feel like I'm swooning on the brink of an altered state.
