Another NEW Review of A Red Witch, Every Which Way!

Another wonderful new review of "A Red Witch, Every Which Way" (the collaborative poetry book by j/j hastain & I , published this year by Hysterical Books), written by Stephanie Kaylor on Goodreads. (I'm not sure how I missed this, because it looked as if I had "liked" the review, but I don't remember reading it until today. Maybe I'm having a mental glitch, but in any case, here's the review):
"One side a positive/ healing/fetish violence./One side a negative/stab wound/fantasy/reality./Never ending hemorrhaging hemisphere. Never/ending lavish/light."
This collaborative book felt like a haunted house-- disturbing yet deliciously so, a journey one walks into and doesn't want to leave despite the grotesque nature of it all; the internal, the walls, the decay, the macabre and its traces. The interviews at the end were as rich as the poems, breaking down the barrier between process & product as swiftly as they did the same with the bodily & textual."

NEW in the #NotTrump Series of Yes, Poetry - "I'm Not Voting For Your Fake Dog Treats", a collaborative poem by j/j hastain & Juliet Cook

"Too many people use a word like wife
beater casually.
Too many people bet money to watch
two dogs try to kill each other
and then toss the bloody ripped parts in the trash."

from "I'm Not Voting For Your Fake Dog Treats", a collaborative poem by j/j hastain & Juliet Cook, at Yes, Poetry's #NotTrump series.

Happy Horrific Holidays from Thirteen Myna Birds! (The last Myna Birds flock of 2016 is HERE!)

Happy Horrific Holidays from Thirteen Myna Birds!

Gifts of new poetry for you by Matthew Hall, Craig Firsdon, Timothy Thomas Cole, Mitch Grabois, Erin Renee Wahl, Jennifer MacBain-Stephens, J.C. Mari, John Grey, and Catfish McDaris (and one older poem still remaining by Howie Good).

"We eat flames and don’t rinse - the slightest interference could potentially destroy everything - lock up your daughters - carnage comes when the creeping crescent wanes - black and white butterfly - of a dead and forgotten poet - your shine smaller - red proves the prophecy - Money is that thing that makes me special - out the windows with laughter - The gut bucket fills up immediately - Mummies are dancers - Church spires pointing toward hell - a silence like all the mouths are sewn shut "

NEW in The Rising Phoenix Review - Blood on the unpillowed cases

"My fireworks are not even in control
of the red blood cells turning
into glowing alien space ships
dripping down. An onslaught
of tiny strobe lights, of red snow
hitting my windshield.
Three dead birds on the top of my head
had wanted to fly inside my brain,
but never made it past the cracked hat."
from my poem "Blood on the unpillowed cases", newly appearing within The Rising Phoenix Review

The Halloween flock of Myna Birds has arrived!

The Halloween incarnation of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived!
I was tempted to say Happy Halloween, but it's not very happy.
It's sad, disturbing, deathly, and haunted by discomfort and fear.
New poems by Tonya Eberhard, Lorraine Cipriano, Mark Antony Rossi, Matthew Rempe, Daniel G. Snethen, Wayne F. Burke, and John Grey are HERE - http://13myna.blogspot.com/
"I am an accident creating accidents - The teeth protruding from the ground - all the way to the brain cells - A voice screaming black crows from the lungs - gears replacing both eyes and feet - language sparse and close to the bone - kills the magpie - your soul a hollow shell - the hideous wormy thing in the middle - The bloodied wig - darkened and silenced by thick green curtains."

NEW in The Rising Phoenix Review!

"The Blob scared me when I was a little girl.
I would scream inside my own head
and then mentally hurl The Blob until it broke
through a window and entered the house across the street.
Was it my fault if it grabbed someone there?
Was it my fault for not screaming out loud
to let them know The Blob was coming?"
from my poem "Trigger Loving Blob", newly published at The Rising Phoenix Review!
more HERE - https://therisingphoenixreview.com/2016/10/14/trigger-loving-blob-by-juliet-cook/

(also, my Trigger Loving Blob #2 appeared in Thank You For Swallowing last week, which can be accessed in the post below this one).

NEW Thank You for Swallowing (Toxic Masculinity)!

"Was it my fault because of whatever
I was wearing? A life-sized pussy inside a Blob
deserves it. Deserves to be shrunken down."
from my poem "Trigger-Loving Blob #2" inside the new issue of Thank You for Swallowing
(I wasn't thinking of Trump's blob-like pussy comment when I wrote this poem, because that particular blobulating of his had not been revealed yet - but I will admit, I think that less than a week after that video was revealed is a fitting time for this poem to be published).

Barbaric Restraint - three new poems of mine are up at Yellow Chair Review Issue 8

man equates to breaking the bones
of his face into tiny pieces."

A collaborative poem by Juliet Cook and Adam Tedesco within the NEW Fall Issue of CONSTRUCTION!

"How many people fall and think
it’s too late to be an organ
donor for anyone anymore?
My organ music has turned off
you and your skull witch
lab cryogenics cracked into
the shot glass of the mirror."
from "Our Last Sabbath Whirring Down", a collaborative poem by Adam Tedesco and myself.
Very excited that this poem appears within the NEW Fall issue of CONSTRUCTION!
You can read it and/or listen to Adam and me read it HERE - http://constructionlitmag.com/the-arts/poetry/our-last-sabbath-whirring-down/

Queen of Cups Issue Nineteen (Juliet Cook and The Hierophant)!

"I replaced brains with hearts then wanted to rip my heart out,
then thought about pouring another heavy dose
of sweet cream into the latest small bird coffin."
I'm quite excited to have three of my poems appearing in this week's Queen of Cups!
Thank you very much to editor Sarah Sousa for choosing these three poems - "Everyone Handles Death Differently", "House of Her Cards" and "Batter Up".

***

(At first I thought it seemed odd that the card drawn for me was The Hierophant, but this interpretation of that card makes sense to me - "The appearance of this card can also point to a problem you are having with all of the above, your inability to conform to institutional demands and follow a pre set program, and your disinclination to give up freedom and individuality for the benefit or a larger group".
In fact, that description seems to fit especially well with my "Batter Up" poem, whose content largely derived from sometimes feeling as if even nontraditional realms, such as poetry land, sometimes seem to feel like some sort of semi-institutionalized circle jerk of a side taking, cake flinging popularity contest, whereas I have no intention of taking any one side of any one chair.)

The New September flock of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived!

"The flowers may never be well again - Cold fronts enter spring - Glances become knives - your name branded on my mind among fields of cotton candy suicides - Mountains of snow in my head - bloated in the sweltering sun - enshrined among - the vacuum of space or the vacuum within - used for drawing blood"

The NEW end of spring/beginning of fall Thirteen Myna Birds flock has arrived! Offering new poetry by Tonya Eberhard, James Croal Jackson, Jameson Bayles, Daniel G. Snethen, and Devon Balwit (and two older poems still remaining by Louise Robertson).

In Darryl Shupe's space, next to his fetal baby skull.

Anyone else who acquires this 100+ page book of bloody oddities, if you send me a photo of the book in your space - or in your yard - or next to your face or wherever else you want to place it, then I'll post it. And if I get enough photos, then I might create a special album of these photos.

Dear Readers! A Red Witch, Every Which Way is waiting for you to explore its strange innards!

Dear Readers:
We are
a combustible
pedigree of bones, bravados
changing
directions we head
through lead
the way please
for us
a chorus of abominable snowman
dolls and stuffed chickens
women or abdominal blood baths.
We are
surging out visceral specters
of tainted debris art.
One eye is filled with magma;
the other eye is an empty hole,
ready to be filled with
your eyes.
~j/j hastain & Juliet Cook
This poem appears on the back cover of "A Red Witch, Every Which Way", which is the NEW full-length poetry book collaboration by j/j hastain and myself, newly published by a new small press, Hysterical Books!
Oodles of poems appear on the inside of the book. More than 100 pages of poem stuff!
"A Red Witch, Every Which Way" is "aboil with the grotesque and macabre. These poems explore the recesses of the body in all its glory and all its shame. No one will read it and come away unscathed."

P.S. This photo isn't of the book of course; the photo is of me and my new haircut, as of August 2016 (the month the book came out).

Just because I have what might look like a tattoo on my upper arm doesn't mean it's really a tattoo.

And just because I'm wearing Jesus socks doesn't mean I really believe in Jesus.

The NEW August flock of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived!

The August flock of Thirteen Myna Birds has arrived! Offering new poetry by Louise Robertson, Shannon Connor Winward, Harriet Stratton, A.J. Huffman, Gary Beck, Valerie Loveland, and Wayne F. Burke all HERE - http://13myna.blogspot.com/
"I wanted to curl my face and spit out - the hook stuck deep - I put my imaginary arm around it again - fearful of what monsters might come - press blue Vaseline from his lips to mine - a crimson river down my throat - the soft explosions of the drops colliding with the window’s pane - sirens pierce the day - there is no functional bottom to an ocean - I could not line up his vertebrae in proper order - I eat each piece when it’s hot - don't want to die - drowned in the coming storm"

A new poem of mine is up at The Chaotic Review!

"Or do you just quit expressing yourself to anyone
except for inside your own head? Do you refuse to tell
what you really mean, how you really feel,
who you really are to yourself or to anyone else?
Does the real you even exist?"
from my poem "What Good Does the Truth Do?", now up at The Chaotic Review, HERE - https://thechaoticreview.com/2016/08/09/what-good-does-the-truth-do-by-juliet-cook/#like-263
