New! Three collaborative poems by Juliet Cook and Darryl Shupe in Menacing Hedge!

I am delighted to share the new Fall 2021 Issue of Menacing Hedge, in which Darryl Shupe and I have three of our collaborative poems appearing, surrounded by lots of other creative oddities!

The three collaborative poems are entitled, "Deep-fried Model Faces Sold Here", "Double Deep-fried Giblets", and "Bloody Rubber Chicken" and are part of a small series we're working on.

"I cracked open the caged runway models who were not allowed
to wear anything other than dirty sheep wool.
Whose teeth and tongues had been removed to make room
for more nasty spittle."

(from the poem "Deep-fried Model Faces Sold Here")

NEW in Menacing Hedge, Summer 2019 - Four of My Poems!

"And so from the ground up and down, you elongate
into different circle shapes. You expand and grow
your own fairy tale pie filled with maggots
that will choke to death or drown in between
the red filling unless they learn to fly."

I'm delighted to have four new poems in the new Summer 2019 issue of Menacing Hedge!

NEW Winter 2017 Edition of Menacing Hedge, including three of my poems!

Very darkly deliciously delighted and excited to have three of my poems included within the NEW Winter 2017 Edition of Menacing Hedge!
The fabulous cover art for this issue was created by Susan Yount.
Thank you for the creative powers of Kelly Boyker Guillemette, Gio Guillemette, Amanda Gowin, Kiara McMorris, and Menacing Hedge.

I was black circles
and dark painted nails.
I kept my rough drafts concealed,
even though they outnumbered the polished lines.
I secretly admired her raw exposures,
her giggling glimmers, her fluttering fingers,
the pages of works in progress,
ripped out fast, splayed all over the room.

(a small sampling from my poem, "Pumpkin Gut Grave")

Poetry Life Force! More January Poetry News!

Despite some distressing and unexpected and difficult to deal with and mentally challenging glitches going on, I am still working on poetry stuff and feeling good about that.

Finished preparing a rather large assortment of chapbooks for mailing, reading submissions for Thirteen Myna Birds and Blood Pudding Press (although admittedly a little behind where I'd like to be, but I am still working on it), and excited to have years worth of my poetry be part of the Crisis Chronicles Press 2015 line up later this year (my second full-length poetry book, Malformed Confetti!)!! and to have one of my short poems be positioned next to a unique artsy drawing (and other poems and other drawings), in ANTENNAE THE ANTENNAE, new from Green Panda Press!

Plus a new Winter issue of Menacing Hedge just went live and includes some individual poems by me, as well as some collaborative poems by j/j hastain and me, here - http://www.menacinghedge.com/winter2015/

Plus my new collaborative chapbook with Robert Cole, MUTANT NEURON CODEX SWARM, with awesome cover art by Christen Baer, is now available from Hyacinth Girl Press, and I'll bet I'll be getting my copies in the mail soon.

If it wasn't for the delights of poetry and art, I'm pretty sure I'd go bonkers (in a non-poetic way) - but lucky for me, that will never happen (unless some non-poet creature eats out my brain).

New Review of They Talk About Death!

"Alessandra Bava's They Talk About Death, the Italian poet and translator's American publishing debut, is a visually stunning piece of art. The book is handmade, ribbon-bound, and is crafted with brightly colored and textured paper. Erin Wells' cover art, "Yellow Carousel Horse," marches lockstep with the content of the collection, resembling, in skull form, a mash-up of Sylvia Plath's portrait and the horse her greatest work is named for, Ariel."
and
"They Talk About Death also takes risks in that it may seem to glorify suicide in lines like, "Suicidal Light demands worship" from "Our Lady of Napalm," a violent re-imagining of Anne Sexton. This worship, which gestures back to the old trope of a woman's beauty being perfected in death, dates to Hamlet's Ophelia and even further. The book borrows from history in this way, and is merciless at times in its treatment of subjects; while in mourning, the author simultaneously praises and curses figures for dying at their own hands. Salome is cited as an example of a woman who is a murderer rather than a victim and Bava praises her for it: "One day, when [John's] head will turn to skull, she'll make a lamp of it for her own enlightenment and write chiaroscuro poems."
A few samples from Sandy Marchetti's in depth new Review of "They Talk About Death" by Alessandra Bava (Blood Pudding Press, 2014).
Read the review in its entirety within the new Menacing Hedge (and while there, read more of the new Menacing Hedge innards too) here - http://www.menacinghedge.com/fall2014/review-marchetti.php

Happy creepy gross delightful disturbing poetry reading!

Read one of my older poems ("A Few of the Motives" from my 2008 chapbook, Planchette) at Crisis Chronicles Press Cyber Litmag -http://library.crisischronicles.com/2014/04/12/a-few-of-the-motives-by-juliet-cook.aspx AND THEN read (AND listen to me reading) some of my newer poems in the brand new edition of Menacing Hedge -http://www.menacinghedge.com/spring2014/.

At least I think they're poems. I wasn't sure what to call my last piece in Menacing Hedge, "Evacuation", because it's three pages of oddly grossed out poetic language in fictional/revised diary shape. Is that prose poetry? I don't know, but it's SOMETHING getting undressed below the waist and being extracted.

Really looking forward to reading/listening to the other pieces this weekend too! Like really. Like really REALLY!
