Happy last day of November! Alice Says Go Fuck Yourself Issue 5 is here!

"It was you who chose to replace the keyhole
with an open wound of red paralysis

with a never ending void of broken glass
hovering above the child's doll.
Then the doll gave birth
to another headless crustacean
and another, and another and yet another ad infinitum."

from "Paint It Red" by Juliet Cook and Daniel G. Snethen

***

I am delighted to have two collaborative poems appearing in Issue 5 of Alice Says Go Fuck Yourself, the Fairy Tales, Folklore, and Ghost Stories Issue, which also celebrates the one year anniversary of this magazine! Brimming with strange poetry, horror stories, art, interviews and more! My collaborative poem with Daniel G. Snethen is called "Paint It Red". My collaborative poem with j/j hastain is called "And Then Rise". There is darkly wonderful cover art by Lauren Gordon, creepily wonderful poetry by Sarah Nichols, Jaya Gandhi, Valerie Loveland and more! Thank you to editors Fox & Cee!

It's Raining Centipedes...

Woke up about an hour before my alarm was set for me to get up today and started unexpectedly writing some poem lines. That hasn't happened in a while, so I ended up feeling excited and energized enough to get up about half an hour before I had planned to so that I could try to finish the poem.

I think I finished it, but it feels even weirder and more WTF than usual and includes centipedes (among other things) and also the last collaborative poem I was working on included centipedes too, not sure where these centipedes are coming from, but at least they're not dolls (or are they?).

While working on the new weird poem, I noticed this other new poem (completed? in-progress? I don't know yet...)...that I must have written a few days ago and then forgotten about. Me and my out-of-whack brain waves, but I'm happy I have two new almost done poems and a few collaborative poems in progress and I'm sorry I'm behind on almost everything else.

Oh and I ended up incorporating a recently acquired word for a certain foot deformity into today's centipede poem, so I'm pretty sure that's something new.

Then I semi-randomly looked up centipede socks and found some.

Then it started pouring rain (and thunder and lightning) and maybe that's because my new poem is called "It's Raining Centipedes".

I also found out about Sinéad O'Connor dying (at only age 56), which makes me sad.

She was one of my favorite singers back when I was in high school (and beyond). I loved her first two albums, at the time I felt like I didn't know anyone else who was as into her music as I was, so my Dad went to one of her concerts with me. In later years, I saw her perform at one of the Lilith Fair concerts, attended with my sisters, and she was wonderful.

"I can tell you the leeches and parasites inside me / have always joined forces with confetti" (inside my CONTORTED DOOM CONVEYOR)...

"I can tell you the leeches and parasites inside me
have always joined forces with confetti.
My glittery brain waves rip the bandages off,
bite back, then cover the wounds with more words.

My mental kaleidoscope collides with another Martini.
I like it sweet and I like it strong. My drinking buddy
is a hot pink narwhal named Mister Melodramatosis."

Another new comment about my CONTORTED DOOM CONVEYOR poetry chapbook!

"I’ve been a fan of Juliet Cook’s poetry for a long while, but her latest book from Gutter Snob Books is nothing short of brilliant. Full of metaphors that’ll make your head spin, and brave honesty that makes you want to dig deeper within your own heart. Some of the most poignant poetry you’ll read this year." "But our conundrum is that it is all grotesquely pretty: the toxic therapists, (who are the real monsters,) the dolls waiting to suck out our mouths, a microwave that restarts itself every four seconds, the brains hungering for escape but trapped in skull prisons. The red ooze we are afraid to witness splatter on the wall, but we also cannot look away." (a snippet of the blurb which appears below)

A few recent photos and comments about my poetry chapbook, "red flames burning out"!

Thank you very much to Jason O'Toole for sharing my newest poetry chapbook, "red flames burning out" on Twitter and saying this about it:

"Mail day brought the new chapbook by the extraordinary @nonvanilla - she's not only an excellent poet - she produces beautiful chapbooks and supports other poets.

The poems are among @nonvanilla Juliet's best. It's relentless, searingly honest, and plays with your emotions."

And thank you very much to MISH for recommending "red flames burning out"

"Mish Recommends: I'm working intensely on a new poetry collection, and these are my inspirations, among others: EROTIC by Alexis Rhone Fancher, RED FLAMES BURNING OUT by Juliet Cook, and THE COMPLETE POEMS by Anne Sexton. I highly recommend all three books."

NEW! Three new poems are making an appearance in the Spring 2023 Issue of Misfit Magazine!

"Some blood is the color of canned cranberry sauce;
other blood is darker inside
and keeps on growing into its own color."

(the beginning of my poem "Thirteen Mice")

I am delighted to have three poems included in the NEW Issue No. 36, Spring 2023 of the fabulous Misfit Magazine!

Two new individual poems by me and one collaboration by j/j hastain and me!

Thank you very much to editor Alan Catlin and all the other poets involved!

Part of Catlin's Introduction to Misfit 36 - "To combat this free form absurdity, malaise, dread, etc. is why we write and read poetry. We have a wide, eclectic range of poets representing all kinds of diversity in voice, tone, and intent. There are the deeply personal poetry of sexual assault to the wildly experimental of Cook and hastain with a little bit of everything else in between."

NEW! Delighted to have SIX NEW POEMS appearing within A Thin Slice of Anxiety!

I have six new poems making an appearance in A Thin Slice of Anxiety!

"This room is the shape and sound
of an old music box. Am I a broken doll?
My head keeps swerving around in circles,
the same song playing again and again

until it starts to hiss into impending oblivion

after being thrown against wall after wall,

in repeated attempts to get rid of my real voice.
Again and again, I say no."

from the poem "Broken Brain Capsules"
